CAMLIN WRITESA Blog About Creative Writing |
In the United States, it is a tradition to declare one or more resolutions for the new year on or around January 1st. I don't often participate in this tradition for pessimistic reasons, but this year I'm going to give it a go. My resolution: Write every day. After all, the only way to become a better writer is to practice. It doesn't matter how much I write or what I write. It can be a simple journal entry, a few thousand words of my current project, a blog post, or even a one-sentence story idea. Anything at all. Ideally, this will be a pretty easy resolution to keep. If it seems to be working, I'll take the difficulty up a notch, but I want to start with something I know I can achieve.
I've started reading a new book: Your First Novel by Ann Rittenberg and Laura Whitcomb. My friend (creator of Poem After Poem) recommended it to me, and I've only read one chapter so far, but it's already speaking to me. The first chapter was all about preparation, including exercises you can do to improve your writing and to warm up before a writing session. I will probably do a number of posts on this book, so stay tuned! One of the suggestions was to write in a journal or diary each day before starting to work on your novel, as a warm up. I plan on starting a personal journal, but I also plan to use my blog posts as "journal entries." So hopefully, as I take this tip to heart and work on my New Year's resolution, posts will become much more frequent. That said, I'm getting kicked out of the library now, so I'll talk to you all some more later! With cautious optimism, Camlin P.S. On a side note, the second chapter of Muggleborn is nearly complete, so yay!
